A Google search turns up that Error 5 is “Access Denied”. A lot of programs, both from Microsoft and from other vendors, open a registry key at launch and then intentionally or unintentionally leave it in a locked state so it can’t be deleted. I’m not sure what caused the rest of the key to get deleted, though. But I’m not the program author. You wouldn’t believe what crap some people sell.
