The graphics and animations are really good, and I was excited to see such a well implemented version of classic Monopoly on the computer.
However, there is no question in my mind that computer has been programmed to cheat its way to victory. Time after time after time, I have watched the computer player skate around the board literally dozens of times, avoiding my property. Many times I’ve gotten my monopoly and loads of houses only for it to dance around it endlessly. It throws itself into jail to avoid houses too. I’ve seen it build a house right before I landed it on it In one recent game, I got the purple and green properties first, and then watched it consistently hand me terrible cards and bad die rolls, making me land on its properties time and time again while it danced around mine.
Seeing defeat certain, it immediately contrived exactly what it needed to get its own monopoly and then I was drawn repeatedly towards those properties like a magnet while it skated around mine. I then draw all the worst cards, including the housing repairs and was steadily beaten into bankruptcy despite having double the properties it had.
The cheating of the computer player is SO obvious that if you saw it you would be astounded. It’s so brazen and obvious at times that it’s absolutely galling. There is no chance that a game would play out in the manner if using actual dice and a board. I don’t believe it for two seconds. It’s clear that the programmer decided to make some players either preternaturally cursed or blessed in order to ensure defeat or victory, and I don’t believe anyone’s luck could be so skewed in one direction or the other.
And in general I had feeling that even if I won I had to fight my way up hill against an inbuilt disadvantage. I don’t exactly why the programmers would program it this way, and I’m sure they’d claim they didn’t, but I suspect it was done this way as a substitute for skill level.
Since the computer isn’t AI, the only way it can win against a skilled player is to skew the dice rolls and other random elements in its favor. Sorry, Hasbro, it’s not fun. When it happens as brazenly as I’ve seen it, it makes you want to throw the computer through a window. Please see the log in the attached picture. This Original Monopoly is pretty entertaining. I initially thought it was biased towards the computer player, but soon realized the wins were pretty random. The only issue I found is that once you save a game, there is no way, through the interface, to delete previously saved games.
